Like Santa Rosa de Lima Church, the parish of St. Catherine in Pecos had its origins in the arrival of the railroad and Carmelite missionary priests from the town of Stanton.
Originally, Masses for English-speaking Catholics in Pecos were held in private homes.
The Carmelites served communities from Big Spring to Sierra Blanca and attended to St. Catherine for 16 years from 1890 to 1906.
A small adobe church named St. Catherine was built in 1892. In 1895, St. Catherine was erected as a parish by the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
In the spring of 1900, strong winds partially destroyed the original adobe church which was replaced by a wooden frame church built on the same foundation.
When the new church for St. Catherine was built in 1959, the wooden church was sent to Coyanosa, Texas.
