St. John's mission church was canonically erected as a parish church with territorial limits established by Bishop Wendelin J. Nold, S.T.D. Father Delaney had extended the work of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine so that it encompassed the greatest number of parishioners. On April 12, 1954, Msgr. Daniel P. O'Connell, P.A. of Galveston, officiated at the ground-breaking ceremonies for the new church.
