St. Joseph Parish roots go back to 1856 when a Mass was celebrated in a farm house west of Good Thunder. Masses were celebrated in homes for many years. This is where teaching and preparation for the Sacraments took place as well. St. Joseph Church was built in 1879. In 1907 the stained glass windows were added. Basement work and other major refurbishing was done between 1955-1967. The entrance was added and the basement enlarged in 1975. A restoration project of the inside was completed in the spring of 2007.
St. Joseph Parish was considered a "Mission Church" for many years, often sharing a priest with other communities. In 1989 they became part of the current Tri-Parish configuration along with St. Matthew and St. Teresa.
